Osteopathy is a philosophy of approach to healthcare that recognises the structural and functional interdependence of the body, the integration of physiological systems and the innate tendency of physiological processes to maintain equilibrium. The practice of Osteopathy relies on the conventional disciplines found in the human biosciences and the clinical sciences. In addition, osteopathic palpatory diagnosis and osteopathic manual medicine bring the defining osteopathic elements to an otherwise conventional differential diagnostic process. Osteopaths treat all ages primarily through manual 'hands-on' intervention of the somatic (body framework) component of the underlying disease process. Osteopathic manipulative intervention is as appropriate and applicable for a wide range of neuro-musculoskeletal conditions whose key features are pain, distress, stiffness and disability, as it is to 'optimise' body function and adaptation in high level sporting activity. Osteopathy is something more not something else! |
